How it works:

Start by selecting a sound spelling to teach, such as Long A. To effectively teach Long A sound spellings, select the 8 cards displaying the various ways to spell Long A. Each spelling comes with a keyword, a well-known word serving as an example for that sound spelling. For instance, you can introduce "AI as in rain" and explore other words with the same spelling, such as "wait, pail, mail, snail, hail, main, stain," etc.

Display all 8 Long A cards simultaneously, but focus on one spelling at a time. This approach helps children grasp that this family of spellings produces the same sound. Having them see all variations in one place aids in locating new words within the group while reading.

To reinforce learning, create long strips of paper for each spelling with the keyword at the top. As children discover additional words with the AI spelling, they can write them on the strip displayed for them. Alternatively, students can maintain notebooks to collect words for each sound spelling, fostering an interactive and engaging learning experience.
